Why Choose Brazu Academy?

At Brazu Academy, we believe in empowering kids through the discipline, focus, and fun of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our Kids Program runs every Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m., offering a safe and welcoming environment for children to grow both on and off the mats. Designed for ages 8 to 13, our classes focus on building strong fundamentals in self-defense while encouraging teamwork, respect, and self-confidence. More than just a sport, our program creates a community. Children gain independence and develop resilience through challenges. Whether your child is new to martial arts or already has experience, Brazu Academy is the perfect place to help them grow stronger—mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Instructors

  • Born in Pernambuco, Brazil, Professor Douglas Barros moved to the U.S. in 1995 and began

training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1998. With a lifelong passion for martial arts—including Judo,

Karate, and Taekwondo—Doug earned his BJJ black belt in 2012 under Master Roberto

“Maguilla” Da Silva, a direct lineage of Grand Master Carlson Gracie Sr.

Coach Doug has been teaching children for over 20 years and is deeply committed to helping

young students grow in confidence, discipline, and self-defense. Before BJJ, he was a

swimming instructor for Montgomery County Recreation, gaining extensive experience working

with kids of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to winning medals at major tournaments like

the IBJJF Pan Ams and Grapplers Quest, Coach Doug brings real-world experience from his

career as a Montgomery County police officer. He continues to train with elite teams in Brazil

and believes BJJ is about understanding body mechanics, not just memorizing moves.

  • Coach Juan Morales began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2007 at 10th Planet Los Angeles

under Eddie Bravo, where he earned his blue belt. While living in Germany, he coached MMA

fighters, helping them sharpen their BJJ techniques for competition.

A combat veteran and current federal employee with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Juan

brings discipline, structure, and real-world experience to every class. He has also coached

youth soccer, and his passion for mentoring kids shines through on the mats. Coach Juan is

dedicated to creating a positive, supportive environment where children can learn, grow, and

    have fun through Jiu-Jitsu.

  • Coach Nick Fliakas began his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey in 2017 under Roberto Marques Da Silva “Maguilla,” training in the Carlson Gracie lineage. Drawn to the creative problem-solving at the heart of jiu jitsu, he quickly fell in love with the art. With over 12 years of experience working with children as a music instructor and licensed clinical therapist, Coach Nick brings a unique blend of teaching skills, psychological insight, and passion for martial arts. He’s dedicated to helping kids grow on and off the mats through the valuable life lessons jiu jitsu offers.
